Isn't this interesting?

Some stuff I have happened upon this week:

ADHD Epidemic
Since the late 1980's an epidemic has been sweeping the globe, affecting children
in dozens of countries across the world. Its name? Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD, formerly known as ADD.) It was not an official disorder until 1987,
but within one year of its classification, 500 000 children had been diagnosed.
The trend has only increased since then. By the turn of the millennium, 3.8 million
children had ADHD, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Although it is
a psychological disorder, very few children are ever given any kind of counselling for
the condition. The most common treatment is the prescription of methylphenidate,
better known by its trade name, Ritalin. Over 2 million children have been prescribed
with the drug in the United States alone. At this time, the United States consumes over
80% of the world's supply of Ritalin, but the rate of prescription is increasing steadily in
Canada and the rest of the world. But what exactly is ADHD?

Death From Ritalin
Between 1990 and 2000 there were 186 deaths from methylphenidate reported to the FDA
MedWatch program, a voluntary reporting scheme, the numbers of which represent no more
than 10 to 20% of the actual incidence. http://www.adhdfraud.org/commentary/1-6-02-2.htm
In 1998 at the National Institutes of Health Consensus on ADHD, the following statement was
issued: "We do not have an independent, valid test for ADHD, and there is no data to indicate
that ADHD is due to a brain malfunction".

From the most shocking article yet on Ritalin (1994) :

Support and advisory groups play an important role in the distribution of information regarding ADHD and its treatment. In recent years there have
been large increases in membership in these organizations and participation
in their activities.

Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD) is the nation’s
largest ADHD support organization. CHADD has a membership
of over 28,000 and has 600 chapters nationwide. CHADD sponsors parent support groups, convenes meetings featuring speakers, works with local school systems
and provides information regarding ADHD related issues. It has recently come to
the attention of the DEA, that Ciba-Geigy (the manufacturer of the methylphenidate product marketed under the brand name Ritalin) contributed $748,000 to CHADD from 1991 to 1994.

The DEA has concerns that the depth of the financial relationship with the manufacturer was not well-known by the public, including CHADD members that have relied upon CHADD for guidance as it pertains to the diagnosis and treatment of their children.
